100 Ton Load Cell for Industrial Weighing and Force Measurement
Most 100 ton load cells fall into two camps: ones built to a price, and ones built to keep working when installation conditions get ugly. On jobs where a failed sensor means a shutdown weighing thousands of dollars per hour, that second camp matters. Kingmach makes these sensors, not as a sideline, but as part of a broader geotechnical and structural monitoring catalog. The result is a range of 100 ton load cells that share components and calibration workflows with instruments already proven in pile testing and bridge bearing monitoring. It also means that when a project needs a nonstandard flange pattern or an extended temperature compensation window, the engineering team doesn’t start from scratch. This page covers what to expect from a 100 ton Kingmach cell, where they’re typically used, and what the ordering process looks like.
Technical Detail
Kingmach’s 100 ton load cells are built around a shear-web or columnar sensing element, depending on the form factor and application. For compression-only weighbridge and silo applications, a low-profile canister style is common. Where the load will also go into tension—for example, in a material testing frame—a threaded or clevis-ended S-beam or tension link makes more sense. The strain gauge bridge is bonded to a heat-treated alloy steel element and sealed to IP67 as standard, with IP68 available as an upgrade. Signal conditioning can be integrated or left to an external amplifier, depending on the site wiring layout. One detail that comes up during specification is the cable. A standard 100 ton cell ships with a 5-meter shielded cable, but Kingmach will build to any specified length and add protective armoring if it’s going to be buried in concrete or dragged across a construction site. The company warehouse stocks a range of mounting accessories—base plates, spherical washers, and tension adapters—that prevent sideloads from corrupting the reading. For multi-cell systems, a junction box with individual span adjustment is often included. The sensing element is designed to survive a 150% overload in the intended direction, and lateral loads up to 10% of capacity without permanent drift. Nonlinearity is typically held under 0.05% of full scale, with hysteresis and repeatability errors each below 0.03%. These numbers are verified on a deadweight calibration stand that Kingmach maintains in-house. A calibration certificate traceable to national standards ships with every cell, and the company can arrange for ISO 17025-accredited recalibration as a post-sales service. Applications cross several industries: heavy capacity hopper and tank weighing, rollout force measurement in steel mills, press force monitoring in concrete block manufacturing, and anchor load verification for tie-downs in precast construction. Because Kingmach also manufactures geotechnical instruments, customers sometimes combine a 100 ton load cell with a data logger and an inclinometer to build a complete structural health monitoring package for a single bridge pylon or retaining wall. The technical support team will help match a 100 ton cell to the right data acquisition hardware, and if the standard product doesn’t fit, they can draw up a modified version within a few weeks.

A well-made shear-web or columnar cell will give you combined error (nonlinearity, hysteresis, and repeatability) below 0.05% of full scale. That means on a 100 ton range, the reading is reliable to within about 50 kg. Real-world performance depends heavily on mounting alignment and temperature swings, so the mounting kit matters as much as the sensor itself.
It depends on the cell design. A low-profile canister cell is usually compression-only. If you need both, an S-beam or a tension link rated for 100 tons will do the job. Kingmach can supply either, and if the application mixes compression and tension in the same axis, they will recommend a cell designed to handle that load reversal.
The simplest step is to specify a cell with surge protection built into the cable connector or junction box. Avoid routing the signal cable parallel to power lines. For permanent outdoor installations, a grounded metal enclosure and a shielded, twisted-pair cable running inside a steel conduit gives better results than relying on the sensor’s internal protection alone. If on-site welding is expected, disconnect the cell completely.
Common requests include a different thread size on the loading face, a nonstandard flange bolt circle, an extended temperature compensation range (down to -40°C or up to +120°C), or a different cable length and armor type. Kingmach handles these modifications at the engineering level, not just the sales desk, so lead time is normally around three to five weeks depending on the extent of the change.
The cell is placed in a deadweight force standard machine or a calibrated hydraulic reference frame. At least five load points are tested from zero to full scale, and the process repeats three times to confirm repeatability. Kingmach provides a calibration certificate with each cell, and the values are traceable. For annual recalibration, the cell can be sent back or a contracted lab can perform the work on site if the equipment is available.
