Vibrating Wire Strain Gauges for Bridge, Tunnel & Dam Monitoring: Complete Selection Guide

Load Cell Amp for Stable Sensor Outputs
When a strain gauge sensor outputs a few millivolts, the signal can easily get lost in electrical noise. That’s where a load cell amp steps in—turning that tiny change into a usable reading. For monitoring systems in geotechnical and industrial settings, this amplification isn’t just a box on a diagram; it’s the difference between data you can act on and numbers you don’t trust. Kingmach, as a manufacturer of geotechnical instruments, builds amplifiers that sit in that practical middle ground—reliable enough for demanding sites, without the premium pricing that comes with lab-grade equipment. Our load cell amps are designed for engineers who need a consistent signal chain, whether they’re tracking structural loads on a bridge or measuring tension in a retaining wall. With options for different excitation voltages and output protocols, these amps fit into a wide range of monitoring networks. And because no two projects are the same, we offer customization—you’re not stuck with a one-size-fits-all box.
Technical Detail
Kingmach load cell amps pick up the mV signal from strain gauge sensors and boost it to a standard analog output like 0-5V, 0-10V, or 4-20mA. That compatibility means you can connect directly to most data loggers or PLCs without extra signal converters. Gain and zero adjustments are accessible on the board, so you can calibrate on site without special software. Some models also include low-pass filtering to cut out 50/60 Hz line noise—common in field environments—and galvanic isolation to protect downstream equipment from ground loops. For projects that run on a tight budget, we offer cost-effective versions that still handle temperature-compensated drift correction, keeping long-term measurements trustworthy. These amps sit inside monitoring cabinets for slope stability systems, weighbridge terminals, and pile load tests. They’re also used in automated industrial scales where rapid reading updates matter. Because Kingmach makes a broad range of sensors and instruments, the amp is designed to work seamlessly with our own pressure cells, load cells, and settlement sensors, but it doesn’t mind if you’re connecting a third-party gauge. If your setup requires something non-standard—say, a specific excitation voltage or a weatherproof enclosure—our engineering team can adjust the design. We also provide wiring diagrams and remote support during commissioning, which helps when your job site is 200 km from the nearest town.

They’re often the same thing, but an amplifier specifically boosts the tiny millivolt signal, while a conditioner might also filter, linearize, or convert it to a standard output. Most practical units combine both functions.
It depends on your sensor’s specs. Most common load cells work with 5 V or 10 V excitation. Higher voltage gives a bigger output signal, which can improve signal-to-noise ratio, but you need to stay within the sensor’s maximum rating. Kingmach’s amps are typically set to 5 V but can be customized.
You can’t sum two raw load cell signals with a single-channel amp—you’d need a junction box with trim and a summing amplifier, or a multi-channel unit. We can build custom multi-channel versions if you need to reduce cabinet space.
4-20 mA current loop is more immune to voltage drop and electrical noise over long distances than a voltage output. Many of our amps offer this as an option.
Our standard boards are meant to go inside a dry enclosure, but we can put them in a sealed box with cable glands for outdoor use. Let us know your requirements.
